Dear Terrence,

I’m out today with a sick child, wondering how things went for you in first period. You can be a real handful with me, and we’ve spent this year building some semblance of a good relationship. I can only wonder what you’re capable of with a substitute teacher (an oxymoron if ever there was one).

My hope is that you’ll be on your best behavior.

In a way, it will be practice of a sort for next year, when you’ll be at the high school with a blank slate, so to speak. You’ll have no baggage, so to speak, and you should be able to make a first impression that provides you with some leeway as the year progresses. Remember: if you start out good and then turn bad, teachers are likely to cut you a bit more slack than if they’ve always seen you as a troublemaker.

Until tomorrow,
Your Teacher
